The Plotting of the Wraith Lord (2022)
.jpg)

This longform ambient single portrays the various machinations of a wraith lord in his castle. Listeners are subjected to misty drones that imitate the curls of smog emanating from the robes of the otherworldly creature, contrasted with the hammer and anvil of the castle’s mighty forge. The piece uses the text of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Ring-Poem” as a basis for many of the pitch sequences by converting letters to the numbers 0-12, which correspond to the twelve tones of the major-minor Western musical scale, which lends the sequential rhythmic phrases a sense of unease and inexplicability. The inspiration for this piece came from the composer’s self image of a ghost sneaking upstairs to prepare a meal at a late hour of the night, or downstairs at an early hour of the morning to play a bit of Wii Sports or Lego: Lord of the Rings.
