Sonus Mundi II: Variis Modis (2021)

1200x1200bf-60 (1).jpg

Sonus Mundi II continues the evolution of the painting-inspired ambient concept album. The title means “varying moods” in Latin, which describes the contrasts in the album between scenes of natural desolation, scenes of natural growth, and scenes of human desolation. The album also continues compositional usage of a synesthetic translation process, and with the greater variety of colors present in this second sampling of paintings, the music has more opportunity to cover fresh ground and explore the “varying moods” conjurable by different timbres, dynamics, and even the distance of sound from the listener. The fourth track, Gettysburg Cyclorama, is particularly notable for its contrast between the stillness of the battlefield and the brief-but-shocking interlude using a style of sound mass composition known as Music Concrete. Shown below are the fifteen paintings used as inspiration. Again, listeners are encouraged to investigate each painting thoroughly and come to their own conclusions about the meaning behind the painting, choice of title, and the relationship between the visual medium and its aural translation.
