Sonus Mundi (2020)

1200x1200bf-60 (1).jpg

Sonus Mundi is an ambient electronic concept album written during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Tensions were high around the world. Many people were physically, emotionally, or spiritually trapped within the confines that the disease had imposed on them. This album attempts to convey listeners out of whatever their trapped state may be by translating the emotions of ten landscape paintings from various time periods and artists into meditative music that encourages the listener to pause and be present with the sound as it evolves, changes, and eventually dies away. Many of the timbres and harmonies present in each track are derived from synesthetic associations, mainly with color, which as a compositional process lends itself well to the translation of a visual medium into an aural one. Below are the paintings used for the inspiration for each track. Listeners are encouraged to investigate each painting thoroughly and come to their own conclusions about the meaning behind the painting, choice of title, and the relationship between the visual medium and its aural translation. The pieces were made using Spitfire LABS and an appropriate amount of lowpass filters, which accomplished a very pleasing sense of depth in all of the sounds. Considering the calming nature of the chosen timbral combinations, it comes as no surprise that some listeners describe the tracks working well on sleep playlists.
