Inmate No. 172022 (2022)

1200x1200bf-60 (1).jpg

This longform ambient single explores themes of imprisonment, abandonment, and loss of hope for the future. The piece was written in January of 2022, and the titular inspiration stems from this time of the year. The title is a play on the date January 17th, 2022, which is the date when music school started back up for the Spring 2022 semester - it had been pushed back from January 8th, to the composer’s frustration. The music attempts to convey the sense of foreboding doom surrounding the question, “will I ever get out of here?”, supported by the chants of a hidden heavenly choir. They cry, “miserere mei”, literally “have mercy on me”, as long, evolving drones wash the listener in a field of dark blue mist. The piece was composed primarily in darkness, with only the occasional contrast of strip-LED lights during the day, which compositionally and psychologically amplifies the impression of endless imprisonment.
